Bulgaria Showcases Heritage at UNESCO Session
UNESCO gives national cultures a chance to become part of world heritage, said Georgi Lozanov, Editor-in-chief of LIK magazine, at the launch of its July issue on Monday. The event was held simultaneously at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, at the Bulgarian News Agency's MaxiM Multimedia Centre in Sofia, and at BTA’s national press clubs, CE Report quotes BTA
Lozanov emphasized that when a country’s achievements are recognized by UNESCO, they become part of a shared global heritage passed down through generations. “It’s a special kind of identity – national, yet grounded in world culture,” he noted.
The July issue of LIK, dedicated to Bulgaria’s connection with UNESCO, coincides with the country’s presidency of the 47th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which runs until July 16 in Paris. Bulgaria will present elements of its cultural and natural heritage during the session.
Lozanov added that the issue reflects how UNESCO’s activities are portrayed in Bulgarian media and public discourse, noting that the organization has consistently remained above political divides—both before and after 1989.
Bulgaria joined UNESCO in 1956, the same year its National Commission for UNESCO was created to coordinate with national institutions. The World Heritage Committee, comprising 21 elected countries, oversees the implementation of the World Heritage Convention.
