New fire erupts near Bosnia's Mostar landfill

After the fire at the Uborak landfill in Mostar was brought under control on Tuesday, a new fire broke out at a nearby dump of old car tires located right next to the municipal waste landfill, prompting the evacuation of residents living in the immediate vicinity.

All available Mostar firefighting units are on the scene, while air tractors are assisting with firefighting efforts from the air, CE Report quotes FENA.

Following a meeting of the Crisis Headquarters, Mostar Mayor Mario Kordić stated that there are suspicions the new fire was deliberately set, emphasizing that the tire dump has no connection to the earlier fire site.

According to him, nearby houses are at risk, which is why the evacuation of residents living close to the fire was ordered.

Kordić added that there are also suspicions that the first fire was deliberately started, citing reports from the field about unauthorized individuals moving around the landfill.

The matter has been reported to the police, and through the city’s Civil Protection Headquarters, steps have also been taken to involve the prosecutor’s office in the investigation.
