Constitutional Court President Criticizes Election Recalculation Delays

Bulgaria

The activities of the Constitutional Court must remain independent of other state bodies, President Pavlina Panova stated on Monday regarding the recalculation of parliamentary election results, CE Report quotes BTA

Her remarks followed news that election services operator Information Services had submitted all recalculation-related documents from the October 27, 2024, elections to the prosecuting magistracy without the Court’s permission. This, Panova said, has hindered the Court’s ability to resolve the case challenging the election results.

On February 26, the Court ordered the Central Election Commission (CEC) to recalculate the results after multiple parties contested the outcome. However, Panova noted that despite the Court’s clear instructions and prompt responses to CEC’s inquiries, the process has been obstructed. She emphasized that only the Constitutional Court has the authority to determine election legality and urged state institutions to cooperate fully.

Meanwhile, CEC Deputy Chair Rositsa Mateva stated that CEC and Information Services are processing data from 2,204 tally sheets. The database was expected to be provided to CEC on Monday, after which efforts would be made to submit the necessary information to the Court.
