Australian PM urges US, China to set global AI rules

Highlighting the rapid advance of artificial intelligence, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called on the US and China to reach a tech agreement and ensure that human control over AI is maintained.

Speaking during a visit to Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California, ahead of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, Albanese pointed out that the US and China are the two major powers in the field of AI and emphasized the necessity of cooperation between both nations, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.

Emphasizing the need to establish "global rules" regarding AI, Albanese stated, "Artificial intelligence is advancing very rapidly, and we need to ensure that humans retain control."

Albanese urged the US and China to work on an AI framework similar to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which was designed to prevent the spread of nuclear arms.

Acknowledging that artificial intelligence carries inherent risks, Albanese expressed that these risks must be mitigated and that actions must align with humanity's best interests.

Furthermore, Albanese did not rule out the possibility of amending Australia's copyright laws to attract AI investment.

US President Donald Trump claimed that a "sick conspiracy" was being waged against AI and data centers, asserting that "the only party pleased by this is China."

China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun remarked, "Stoking fears, creating confrontation, and relentless competition will do nothing but harm global AI governance, which is in no one's best interest."
