Midjourney unveils AI-powered body scanner project
U.S.-based artificial intelligence company Midjourney, best known for its AI-powered image generation tools, has announced a new venture in the healthcare technology sector, unveiling plans to develop a system capable of performing rapid full-body scans.
In a statement published on its blog, the company revealed the launch of Midjourney Medical, a new initiative focused on developing a device called the Midjourney Scanner, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency.
Although the technology is still in the research and development phase and is not yet commercially available, the company says it aims to make MRI-like imaging faster, more accessible, and easier to use.
According to Midjourney, the scanner is designed to operate within a shallow water pool, where the human body would be scanned by a ring of ultrasonic sensors. The system would send ultrasound waves from multiple angles, record the signals reflected by the body, and use artificial intelligence to convert the collected data into detailed images.
The company stated that its target is to complete a full-body scan in less than 60 seconds.
First research facility planned for 2027
Midjourney also announced plans to introduce the technology through a new concept called Midjourney Spa.
The company aims to open its first facility in San Francisco in 2027. The location is expected to include hot pools, saunas, cold plunge areas, and dedicated body-scanning sections where visitors can undergo the new imaging process.
Over the next 12 months, Midjourney plans to focus on algorithm development, hardware engineering, and research trials while preparing the first research-oriented spa facility.
The company’s roadmap includes expanding to additional cities by 2028 and introducing a third-generation scanner. By 2031, Midjourney hopes to establish a global network of more than 50,000 scanners.
Initially, the technology is expected to provide users with detailed body composition maps. For more advanced medical applications, Midjourney said it intends to submit testing results to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as part of the regulatory approval process.
The announcement marks a significant expansion beyond the company’s traditional AI image-generation business, signaling its ambition to enter the rapidly evolving field of AI-assisted medical diagnostics.
