NVIDIA unveils RTX Spark AI chip for personal computers
Chipmaker NVIDIA has unveiled a new chip for personal computers as it expands into the consumer market for devices integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
“This reinvention of the computer is as significant as the reinvention of the phone into what we now know as the smartphone,” said Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s chief executive officer, while introducing the new RTX Spark chip.
Huang made the announcement on Monday during a keynote speech ahead of the opening of the Computex technology exhibition in Taipeik, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
Separately, on Sunday, the United States tightened its rules governing the sale of NVIDIA’s most advanced chips to Chinese companies.
NVIDIA described RTX Spark as “a new AI superchip for the era of personal AI agents, delivering a new class of computers that evolve from tools into teammates.”
The chip will be included in a new range of Windows PCs produced by Lenovo, HP, Dell, Microsoft Surface, ASUS, and MSI. These devices are expected to be available this autumn, with models from Acer and Gigabyte to follow.
The move represents a challenge to established names in the PC market such as Apple and Intel.
According to research firm Gartner, Lenovo, HP, Dell, and Apple accounted for nearly 75% of the global PC market during the first three months of this year.
The boom in data centers powering artificial intelligence has helped NVIDIA become the world’s most valuable company, with a market valuation exceeding $5 trillion.
On Sunday, the United States also moved to close a potential loophole involving the shipment of advanced chips such as NVIDIA’s Blackwell processors.
Guidance issued by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security clarified that a license is required to export the most advanced AI chips to overseas subsidiaries of Chinese companies.
Washington has been attempting to prevent Chinese firms from acquiring the high-end computer chips needed to develop advanced artificial intelligence technologies.
