Israel silent amid satellite images of possible reactor at Dimona
According to the Associated Press, satellite images analyzed by seven experts show the beginning of construction work at the Dimona nuclear research center—widely known as the site of Israel’s atomic arsenal.
Israel has not issued any comment, CE Report quotes ANSA.
Three of the experts believe it could be a new heavy-water reactor, capable of producing plutonium and other materials used in nuclear weapons.
The other four agree it's a possibility but also raise the hypothesis that the site may be intended for a warhead assembly facility.
Jeffrey Lewis, an expert from the Middlebury Institute, told AP: "It's hard to imagine it being anything other than a reactor, though the assessment remains circumstantial."
Israel is considered the only nuclear power in the Middle East, but maintains a policy of ambiguity, neither confirming nor denying the possession of nuclear weapons.
The White House also declined to comment on the matter.
