Kosovo overcomes recognition barriers through sports achievements

Sports

Sport is increasingly playing a key role in the recognition and strengthening of Kosovo on the international stage. Numerous elite European and world medals have been awarded to Kosovo through the triumphs of many athletes on podiums across various countries and major international competitions, both in individual and team sports.

Judo remains undoubtedly the most successful sport in Kosovo’s 17 years of statehood. From three Olympic appearances, Kosovo’s judo team has won no less than five Olympic medals, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

The President of the Judo Federation, Agron Kuka, told KosovaPress that they have faced obstacles in many countries that do not recognize Kosovo. However, despite these challenges, Kosovo’s flag has been raised high thanks to the outstanding performances of the country’s judokas.

University professor and football coach Malsor Gjonbalaj believes that sports are providing Kosovo with the most dignified international representation and that the state should invest more in this sector.

As a result of these successes, Kosovo has secured the right and gained the trust to host the biggest sporting event in its history—the Mediterranean Games in 2030. According to the Secretary General of the Kosovo Olympic Committee, this event will bring multiple benefits to the country.

Additionally, European championships for youth categories will also be held in Kosovo this year in sports such as handball, volleyball, basketball, and karate.
