Barcelona issues ultimatum to Frenkie de Jong

Sports

Disappointment at Barcelona regarding Frenkie de Jong is currently quite high. This is mainly due to the fact that the very talented midfielder has not been reaching his performance limits, despite earning an extraordinarily high salary. This is believed to be around 18 to 20 million euros. It is a heavy burden for the club, which is still facing financial difficulties, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

Because of this recent mismatch between a salary that corresponds to a De Jong in absolute top form and a De Jong who wasn’t even included in the last two league matches, Barca is said to have given the Dutchman an ultimatum, according to “Sport,”.

This ultimatum focuses on his contract, which expires in 2026, and states: Either De Jong extends his contract or he will be sold in the summer transfer window. The Catalans would not want to enter the final year of his contract with him and risk a free transfer.

Therefore, De Jong could and should continue playing for Barca — and for the club that wants him. However, a possible contract extension would need to be accompanied by a significant salary reduction. It is still unclear whether he would accept that, especially since it remains uncertain whether his starting position will improve again under coach Hansi Flick.
