Ilie Bolojan Becomes Romania’s Interim President as Klaus Iohannis Steps Down
On Wednesday, Klaus Iohannis concluded his presidency, handing over duties to Ilie Bolojan, who assumed the role of interim president, CE Report quotes Agerpres
The transition ceremony at Cotroceni Palace lasted about 30 minutes, during which Iohannis welcomed Bolojan, posed for a photo, and held a brief meeting. Later, at the Marinescu Plateau, Iohannis saluted the Guard of Honour for the last time as the national anthem played.
Iohannis resigned on Monday, citing the need to prevent a political crisis following the initiation of his suspension process in Parliament. "To spare Romania and its citizens from this unnecessary and negative development, I resign," he stated.
On Tuesday, the Constitutional Court confirmed the vacancy and appointed Bolojan, the Senate president, as interim leader until May. The presidential election's first round is set for May 4, with a runoff on May 18.
A day before assuming office, Bolojan suspended himself from his role as interim president of the National Liberal Party (PNL).
