At the end of her mandate as Permanent Delegate of the Moldova to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), Ambassador Corina Călugăru held an official meeting with the organization’s Director-General, Khaled El-Enany, to review the results of bilateral cooperation and outline future priorities, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

The discussions focused on the evolution of the partnership between Moldova and UNESCO, as well as the organization’s support in achieving several strategic objectives. These include assessing national preparedness for the use of artificial intelligence, strengthening institutional capacities in the field of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, protecting biosphere reserves and cultural assets in situations of armed conflict, and promoting the Gagauz language and culture.

The parties also reviewed Moldova’s priorities in the context of its mandate as a member state of UNESCO’s Executive Board for the 2025–2029 term. According to officials, the country’s active engagement within the organization has contributed to increasing its international visibility.

The UNESCO Director-General praised Moldova’s role within the organization, noting that it has become a “visible and coherent” partner. Among recent achievements, he highlighted the country’s presidency of Electoral Group II, its first-ever election to UNESCO’s Executive Board, participation in the Group of Francophone Ambassadors, and the inclusion of two traditional elements — the “Cămașa cu altiță (ia)” and the “Cobza” — on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Ambassador Corina Călugăru was presented with a certificate marking the completion of her mandate, a symbolic gesture underscoring the end of an important stage in Moldova’s diplomatic representation and promotion of its interests within UNESCO.

Founded in 1945 and headquartered in Paris, UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to promoting quality education for all, safeguarding cultural and natural heritage, supporting science and innovation, and defending freedom of expression and cultural diversity. It is widely known for the World Heritage List and the Intangible Cultural Heritage List, which recognize elements of outstanding universal value.
