Greece Launches Marine Parks, Cuts ATM Fees

Politics

Greece is creating two new marine national parks—one in the Ionian Sea and one in the South Aegean—covering 27,500 sq km, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said in a Tuesday interview. He called the move "immensely important" both environmentally and symbolically, exceeding initial targets by 25%.

Marinakis dismissed claims of “grey zones” in the Aegean as baseless and illegal, affirming Greece’s right to act unilaterally in areas under its sovereignty. He emphasized that dialogue with Türkiye continues, but without concessions, highlighting key agreements with Egypt and Italy on maritime zones, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia

The spokesperson also addressed recent legislation capping ATM transaction fees at €1.50 and banning loophole charges. Interbank transaction fees have also been eliminated.

Marinakis announced that more marine conservation initiatives are planned and touched on other issues, including proposed constitutional amendments, fiscal improvements, and stricter measures to deter illegal migration.
