Gov’t Slams PASOK Over Asylum Vote Abstention
Greece’s government accused the main opposition party PASOK-Movement for Change of “utter confusion” after it abstained from a key parliamentary vote to suspend asylum applications for arrivals by sea from North Africa, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia
Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis criticized PASOK for voting “present” while also backing a proposal declaring the amendment unconstitutional. “If they believe it is unconstitutional, they cannot justify abstaining,” Marinakis said, adding the party again showed it had no real alternative during a crisis.
He emphasized that the suspension aims to curb irregular migration and is based on legal precedent, including measures taken in the Evros region in 2020. Marinakis defended the policy as necessary and realistic, aligned with practices in other European countries, and designed to deter illegal entries.
