Moldova, Romania United on EU Path

Politics

Moldovan President Maia Sandu reaffirmed the country's commitment to joining the European Union during a joint press conference in Chisinau with Romania’s newly elected President Nicusor Dan, who is on his first official visit, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

Sandu congratulated Dan on his election victory and praised Romania as a strong ally offering experience, support, and a powerful voice in Brussels. “Romania stands with us on our path to the EU,” she said, highlighting the strategic importance of this partnership amid ongoing threats from Russia.

She emphasized that the war in Ukraine is not just military but also one of manipulation and disinformation, targeting democracies like Moldova. Sandu warned that if Moldova were to fall under Russian control, the consequences would extend beyond Chisinau, threatening Bucharest, Odessa, and Europe.

The leaders discussed infrastructure projects linking the two countries—roads, bridges, and energy lines—and outlined plans to expand cooperation, including energy imports from Romania’s Black Sea reserves and the future Cernavoda reactors.

With over 1,700 Romanian companies in Moldova and 8,000 Moldovan businesses in Romania, economic ties are growing. Sandu also called for reduced wait times at border crossings, saying, “The Prut must be a bridge, not an obstacle.”

She concluded by thanking Romania for its support in EU institutions and stressed that Moldova seeks not only to benefit but also to contribute to a safer, stronger Europe.
