Two Israeli Embassy employees have been shot dead outside a Jewish museum in downtown Washington, officials said.

The man and woman were a couple and were killed as they were leaving an event focused on helping Gaza residents at the Jewish Capital Museum, the BBC writes, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

The suspect has been detained and identified by police as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez.

Police said he shouted "free Palestine" after being arrested and officers "will look into possible terrorism links".

The Israeli embassy said the two staff members were shot "at close range" while Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar called it a "shocking terrorist attack."

United States President Donald Trump has condemned the act.

"These horrific murders, clearly based on anti-Semitism, must end, NOW! Hate and radicalism have no place in the US," he wrote on Truth Social, a platform he founded.

"Condolences to the families of the victims. How sad that such things can happen! God bless you all!" Trump wrote.
