Brothers of Italy councillor resigns amid backlash
Silvia Colombo, a councillor and whip in Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party in the town of Treviglio near Bergamo has resigned after her recent alleged claim in the City Council that pregnant colleagues should quit sparked an uproar.
Colombo stepped down, also accusing her party of "dealing with this media storm" that followed her statement "with too much carelessness", CE Report quotes ANSA.
"Being active in politics cannot be a grim power game, made of personal attacks, opportunism and empty promises.
"For this reason, I have decided to resign and go back to my job and to being a mother", she said.
