Central European Midday Report: "Government Decisions and Diplomatic Farewells"
Minister Defends Pension Increase Amid Controversy:
Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Ivaylo Ivanov, stood firm on his decision to propose an 11 percent increase in pensions at an upcoming meeting of the Supervisory Board of the National Social Security Institute (NSSI). Addressing public concerns of a potential lower increase, Minister Ivanov emphasized his authority to make independent decisions, stating, "It is my right, and I will exercise it without needing anyone's advice." The proposed increase aligns with the State Social Security Budget Law for 2024, approved by parliament, and funded accordingly. While NSSI experts suggested a 10 percent increase based on calculations of inflation and average insured income, Minister Ivanov affirmed his intention to propose the higher figure, citing precedent from a similar situation in 2021. The announcement comes amidst political tensions, with the "We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria" party collecting signatures for an extraordinary session of the National Assembly in response to a draft report suggesting a 10 percent increase. The NSSI Board is set to make the final decision on Tuesday.
