Nawrocki Wins, Gov’t Shake-Up Looms

Poland

Karol Nawrocki, backed by the socially-conservative opposition party Law and Justice, has defeated centrist Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski of the ruling Civic Coalition (KO) in the second round of the presidential election. Trzaskowski had the support of KO and other coalition partners, CE Report quotes PAP

Following the result, coalition leaders hinted at the need for a policy shift and government reshuffle. Wlodzimierz Czarzasty of The Left confirmed a reshuffle was agreed upon, needing six weeks for final arrangements. Poland 2050’s Szymon Holownia said decisions were made on the government’s structure and future direction, while PSL leader Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz spoke of high tensions but a shared commitment to a united plan for the country.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for a parliamentary vote of confidence on June 11 to secure backing for his government.
