Jon Watts to direct new “Star Wars” film

A new film in the “Star Wars” movie franchise is in development in Hollywood, and the feature will be directed by Jon Watts, U.S. media recently reported, citing Variety.

Jon Watts became well known after directing the popular “Spider-Man” trilogy starring Tom Holland, which included “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021).

The most recent film in that franchise, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” was released in 2026 and was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

Before being chosen to direct the “Spider-Man” trilogy, Jon Watts also directed films such as “Cop Car” and “Clown.”

In 2024, he co-created “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” with Christopher Ford, a coming-of-age television miniseries set during the New Republic era of the “Star Wars” universe. It follows four young characters who embark on a new adventure. Jude Law played the character Jod Na Nawood in the production, which was released on the Disney+ streaming platform.

Following the official announcement last weekend, Jon Watts joins a prestigious list of filmmakers who have directed films in the “Star Wars” franchise, including Irvin Kershner, Richard Marquand, J.J. Abrams, Rian Johnson, and the franchise’s creator, legendary filmmaker George Lucas.

Released in 2019, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” directed by J.J. Abrams, remains the most recent film in the “Star Wars” franchise to be released in theaters.

As Variety previously reported, Simon Kinberg has been chosen to write the screenplay for the next film in the movie series. Simon Kinberg is known for his work as a screenwriter, producer, and director on the “X-Men” franchise, and his selection was considered surprising when it was announced.
