Spain set to boycott Eurovision 2027

Spain is preparing to stay out of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027 as well, for the second consecutive year, in protest against Israel’s participation.

This was announced by José Pablo López, president of public broadcaster RTVE, who will propose to the public television board that Spain maintain its suspension from the contest, following its withdrawal from the 2026 edition, CE Report quotes ANSA.

“We negotiated with the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) to strengthen the governance rules, genuinely sanction any attempt at political exploitation, and guarantee the strict neutrality of sponsors and the contest itself,” López told the parliamentary committee overseeing public broadcasting.

“These are issues that were achieved thanks to negotiations led by the RTVE group,” he said. However, he added, “we should not disguise reality with euphemisms: not all objectives have been achieved, and it is deeply painful” that, despite everything, “Israeli public broadcasting will continue to participate” in the Eurovision Song Contest.

According to López, despite technical progress, there remains “an obvious unresolved issue on ethical grounds.”

“No one with the slightest human sensitivity can witness the suffering of the Palestinian people without a clear and strong condemnation of what is an intolerable human tragedy,” he said, in remarks broadcast live by TVE.

“RTVE’s position on this matter has always been firm and clear,” he concluded.

Madrid had withdrawn from Eurovision 2026, along with Ireland, the Netherlands and Slovenia, following the EBU’s decision to allow Israel to participate.
