Italian actress protests violence against women at Venice Film Festival

Greta Scarano, who this year co-hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Venice International Film Festival alongside Nicolas Maupas, staged a brief performance on the red carpet for Andrea Pallaoro’s “The Echo Chamber” to denounce violence against women and femicide.

Arriving in a long red dress and wearing red lipstick, Scarano stood in front of photographers, drew a mark across her cheek and then extended her hand in a gesture seemingly meaning “enough,” CE Report quotes ANSA.

On the eve of the festival, the actress had also used a photocall to display a fan featuring a slice of watermelon, whose colors have become a symbol of Palestinian resistance.

“As you know very well, I have always taken a stand and have never been afraid to do so publicly,” she said during a streamed discussion about her role at the Venice festival. “Absolutely nothing has changed, not even now that I hold this role. I don’t believe I should be more cautious or less consistent with the positions I have always taken.”
