Moldova Adopts Uniform Gas Tariffs

Energy

Chisinau — Lawmakers in Moldova have adopted a bill in its second reading aimed at strengthening the country’s energy security through key reforms in the natural gas sector, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

A central provision of the bill is the introduction of a uniform nationwide gas distribution tariff, based on network pressure levels. The National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) will develop the methodology and approve the tariffs. Previously, distribution fees varied by region, from the lowest in Chișinău to the highest in Taraclia.

The new system is expected to foster market competition and enable suppliers to expand operations across the country, benefiting consumers with better pricing and service.

Large industrial consumers will gradually shift to the free natural gas market under ANRE’s supervision, gaining access to competitive supply offers. The law also mandates suppliers to maintain gas reserves equivalent to 15% of annual average consumption.

Additionally, ANRE will be authorized to assign suppliers to ensure minimum gas deliveries to the Transnistrian region.

The law will take effect upon its publication in the Official Journal. Moldova currently has over 830,000 gas consumers, including around 16,000 businesses.
