Bulgaria joins European Birdwatch Days

Bulgaria joins the traditional European Birdwatch Days, which this year will be held October 3-4, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds said on Monday. The event brings together more than 30 BirdLife International partners from Europe and Central Asia in a friendly birdwatching challenge.

EuroBirdwatch26's main aim is to raise public awareness of the need to protect migratory bird species, as well as the habitats where they breed, stop along their migration routes and spend the winter, CE Report quotes BTA.

Migratory birds face numerous threats along their journeys, including climate change, which is disrupting seasonal patterns; collisions with power infrastructure; collisions with glass surfaces of buildings; intensive land use; and poaching.

The initiative highlights the importance of international cooperation in bird conservation. BirdLife partners work across different countries and continents, bringing together experts, ornithologists, volunteers and birdwatchers to monitor bird populations and help protect endangered species around the world.

Bulgaria takes part once again with a series of events organized by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds and its volunteers. The organization invites everyone who loves birds to experience the spectacular phenomenon of migration and contribute to the collection of valuable data by heading outdoors and recording their observations over the two-day event in the SmartBirds Pro app. Observations can be submitted until 4 p.m. on October 4. All data collected from participants will be processed and compiled by BirdLife Slovakia, with the results to be announced on October 5.

The initiative is held as part of the Together for Nature - Citizens for a Green Future project, with support from the Swiss-Bulgarian Cooperation Programme - Civic Engagement and Transparency Mechanism (CETM) 2024-2029.
