Kate Hudson, the actress who once had the opportunity to join the Marvel universe following her Oscar nomination, recently revealed that she turned down the role of Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s iconic Spider-Man film in 2002.

The role that ultimately defined the trilogy went to Kirsten Dunst, according to Deadline. Appearing on Watch What Happens Live, the well-known actress confirmed that she passed on the opportunity, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

“Yes, I did. And now when I look back, it’s one of those things that makes me think, ‘It would have been nice if I had been in a Spider-Man movie,’” she said.

However, Hudson said she has no regrets, explaining that while filming The Four Feathers she met Heath Ledger, who became a close friend.

“So a part of me is like, ‘Life is exactly how it’s supposed to be.’ And I’m grateful for that,” Hudson explained.

She also admitted that she sometimes thinks about the missed opportunity: “I watch that movie and think, ‘It would have been fun to play that character.’”

Hudson emphasized that she believes Kirsten Dunst was the perfect choice for the role.

“It’s uncomfortable to talk about these things, because the people who played the roles are the right people for them, right? And life unfolds the way it does,” she added.

As reported by CE Report, Dunst played Mary Jane in Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Spider-Man 3 (2007). With director Sam Raimi previously hinting that he would be “completely open” to directing another Spider-Man film, fans are hoping Dunst might one day return to the role.
