A prisoner in Alabama is set to be executed with nitrogen gas in the southern U.S. state tonight.

Anthony Boyd (54), who has maintained his innocence, was sentenced to death in 1995 for the murder of 32-year-old Gregory Huguley on July 31, 1993, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

Boyd’s execution is scheduled for 11:00 p.m. GMT at a state prison in the city of Atmore. He was convicted of killing a man over a drug debt by setting him on fire with gasoline.

This year, 39 executions have been carried out in the United States — the highest number since 2013, when 39 prisoners were also executed. Florida has carried out the most (14), followed by Texas (5), South Carolina (4), and Alabama (4).

Thirty-three of the executions in 2025 were performed by lethal injection, two by firing squad, and four by nitrogen hypoxia. The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 U.S. states, while California, Pennsylvania, and Oregon currently have moratoriums in place.
