Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra to perform in Croatia

To mark its 30th anniversary, the Varaždin Concert Office will host a gala concert by the famous Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, 24 May.

The event, supported by the City of Varaždin and the Liszt Institute - Hungarian Cultural Centre in Zagreb, is scheduled together with the opening of the exhibition "Play, Gypsy! Roma Music from Liszt to Hungarikum" at the atrium of the Varaždin City Council, CE Report quotes HINA.

Raymond Rojnik, director of the Concert Office, said that this is the first time such a large ensemble from Budapest will perform in Varaždin.

Hungarian Ambassador Csaba Demcsák noted that the orchestra is the largest Roma music ensemble, boasting over 100 members.

Varaždin Mayor Neven Bosilj said that eight ambassadors have already confirmed attendance and announced Hungary as a partner for this year's Varaždin Baroque Evenings festival.

The concert starts at 7 p.m. on 24 May, with a rain date set for 31 May.

The exhibition "Play, Gypsy! Roma Music from Liszt to Hungaricum" explores the influence of Roma music on the formation of Hungarian folk music genres like verbunkos and csárdás, as well as on works by famous Hungarian composers including Franz Liszt.
