National Gallery Unveils Unique Tapestry Collection

Culture

For the first time, Bulgaria’s National Gallery is showcasing its exceptional collection of Western European tapestries at Kvadrat 500. The exhibition runs from March 12 to August 3, CE Report quotes BTA

Acquired in the 1960s by the Bulgarian National Bank, these 16th-18th century Flemish and French masterpieces were once part of the now-defunct National Gallery of Decorative and Applied Arts. The display in Hall 19 is the result of extensive research, restoration, and conservation efforts.

Tapestries, known for their intricate craftsmanship and historical significance, were symbols of wealth and prestige, adorning palaces and castles. The exhibition also features lectures, specialized tours, and workshops on tapestry-making and conservation. A mobile digital version will be presented in Bulgarian cultural institutions abroad.

The project was supported by the Ministry of Culture, the French Institute in Bulgaria, and the National Academy of Arts. The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) is a media partner.
