Sofia Film Fest in Varna to Showcase Award-Winning Films and Promising Debuts

The 16th edition of Sofia Film Fest in Varna will take place from March 21 to 29, featuring acclaimed films and promising debuts, according to organizers from Artin Vision, CE Report quotes BTA

The festival opens with the historical drama The Pledge by Svetoslav Ovcharov, exploring a political conspiracy around Bulgaria’s Liberation. The cast includes Zahari Baharov, Assen Blatechki, Deyan Donkov, and Ofelia Popii.

Oscar, Golden Globe, and César-winning Latvian animation Flow by Gints Zilbalodis will also be screened. One of the most anticipated films is The Shameless by Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov, which competed in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard, earning Anasuya Sengupta a Best Actress award. The film portrays two Indian women challenging societal norms.

Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof’s Oscar-nominated The Seeds of the Sacred Fig tackles themes of resistance in an authoritarian society, while The Return, starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, offers a fresh take on the Odysseus legend. Other highlights include Pia Marais’ Transmazonia and Koln 75, a documentary on Keith Jarrett’s iconic concert.

The festival closes on March 29 with Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson, which won a special jury prize at San Sebastian and earned multiple nominations, including two for the Palme d’Or.
