Construction of the 400 kV Vulcanesti–Chisinau overhead power line is 65% complete, according to Moldova’s Minister of Energy, Dorin Junghietu. The project, which began in April 2024, spans 157 km, with over 130 km already under active development. So far, 180 poles have been assembled and more than 380 foundations built, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

At the Chisinau Electric Station, installation of primary equipment has begun, and foundation work for autotransformers is underway. The €61 million project—€27 million of which is allocated to the line itself—is financed by the World Bank Group.

Junghietu emphasized the line's strategic importance in strengthening Moldova’s energy independence by bypassing the MGRES plant in the Transnistrian region. Once completed, it will connect southern and central Moldova, enabling up to 630 MVA of electricity transit—enough to meet 50% of peak consumption.

The line will also facilitate electricity imports from Romania and allow exports of surplus renewable energy. Completion is expected by the end of 2025.
