EU Fines Apple and Meta

EU Fines Apple and Meta

Business

The European Union has imposed major fines on U.S. tech giants Apple and Meta in its first enforcement action under the new Digital Markets Act (DMA), signaling a tougher approach to regulating Big Tech, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency

Apple was fined €500 million for restricting app developers from steering users to cheaper payment options outside its App Store. Meta received a €200 million penalty for what the EU deemed a coercive ad model on Facebook and Instagram, which forced users to choose between targeted ads or a paid version.

The DMA, which came into force earlier this year, aims to curb the dominance of "gatekeeper" firms and boost consumer choice across Europe’s digital market.

Both companies criticized the decision, calling the regulations unfair and protectionist. The move is expected to escalate tensions between the EU and Silicon Valley over digital regulation.
