Russia Targets Moldova’s Economy Again, Blocking Transporters

Business

Russia has imposed new restrictions on Moldovan carriers, preventing them from delivering goods to Russia. This decision affects transporters who are now stranded at customs, according to MOLDPRES, citing government spokesperson Daniel Voda, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES

This unilateral move from Russia further demonstrates its negative stance towards Moldova, harming its economy without cause. Moldova has made repeated requests to Russia to honor existing agreements, but diplomatic negotiations have failed to yield results.

Russia's actions impact 115 Moldovan transporters and may lead Moldovan businesses to seek more predictable markets, such as those in the EU, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. Moldova continues to work on alternative solutions and partnerships to safeguard its economic interests.

In 2024, Russia’s share in Moldova’s trade was only 2.6%, with Moldova's exports to Russia amounting to $117.7 million, and imports at $208.5 million. Over the past two decades, Russia has imposed several bans on Moldovan goods, including wine, fruits, vegetables, and meat.
