Bulgaria to Amend Laws for Lower Food Prices
Changes to several laws are necessary for consumers to experience lower food prices, Bulgaria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food, Georgi Tahov, stated in an interview with Bulgaria On Air, CE Report quotes BTA
Alongside drafting a new agro-food chain law, amendments are also needed in regulations overseen by the Ministry of Economy and Industry, including those concerning the Consumer Protection Commission and the Commission for Protection of Competition. According to Tahov, these legal changes must work together to ensure farmers receive fair prices for their produce, which will ultimately benefit consumers.
The draft law on agro-food chains is expected to be ready within a month, with public consultations planned involving industry organizations and retail chains. The legislation aims to regulate consumer relations throughout the supply chain and address the imbalance where traders retain most of the value added, leaving farmers at a disadvantage.
Tahov emphasized that the new law seeks to strengthen farmers' market positions by ensuring fairer contractual terms with retailers. He also noted that best practices from other countries are being studied to create a balanced approach that benefits both producers and consumers.
