Bulgaria Grants Temporary Protection to 75,000 Refugees in 2023

The Bulgarian government provided or renewed temporary protection for approximately 75,000 refugees last year, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Over two-thirds were women and children, while a fifth were elderly or disabled, CE Report quotes BTA

With ongoing instability in Ukraine, many refugees plan to remain in Bulgaria long-term. In response, UNHCR and its partners are prioritizing socio-economic integration, focusing on employment, education, language training, and social protection. Efforts also aim to strengthen national systems under increased pressure.
