Ukraine Open to Ceasefire Deal with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine is open to signing a ceasefire memorandum with Russia, following a major phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
Putin called the over two-hour conversation with Trump “frank and substantive,” expressing Moscow’s willingness to work with Kyiv on a roadmap for peace. Zelenskyy confirmed on Monday that such a memorandum, if proposed by Russia, could include ceasefire terms and lay the groundwork for a broader agreement.
While the content of the proposal remains unknown, Zelenskyy said Kyiv would develop its response once it receives Moscow’s suggestions. He emphasized that Ukraine would not consider withdrawing troops from its own territory.
Zelenskyy spoke twice with Trump on the matter, including a follow-up call involving leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and the EU. According to Zelenskyy, Trump believes direct dialogue between Ukraine and Russia is essential, and that Moscow should clarify its vision for a ceasefire.
Potential peace talks are being considered with venues such as Istanbul, Switzerland, or the Vatican. Last week, Türkiye hosted negotiations where both sides agreed to a 1,000-prisoner exchange and continued truce discussions.
Zelenskyy thanked Turkish President Erdoğan for mediating the talks and confirmed that details of the prisoner swap are now under discussion.
