Ukraine Challenges Russia to Agree to Real Ceasefire
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Ukraine is ready to engage in peace negotiations with Russia in any format, but added that Russia must also demonstrate its readiness for a "difficult path to peace."
Sybiha made the statement on social media platform X, CE Report quotes Ukrinform.
"Ukraine once again confirms its readiness for peace talks in any format as soon as we see that Russia is truly prepared for the difficult path to peace, rather than just peace populism or a brief propaganda ceasefire for the May 9 parade," the minister said.
He added that Russia could demonstrate its genuine readiness for peace talks by agreeing to a real ceasefire for at least 30 days.
"If Russia is ready for a 60- or 90-day ceasefire, we are too," Sybiha said.
He stressed that Russia must stop talking about its readiness for peace and start acting by agreeing unconditionally to a real and durable ceasefire.
"When the guns are silent, talks can begin - in any format that will bring peace," Sybiha said.
On April 28, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin announced a "ceasefire" from May 8 to 10 to mark Russia's Victory Day celebrations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said there was no need to wait until May 8 to stop the fighting - it can be done immediately.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, commenting on Putin's announcement of another short ceasefire, stated that U.S. President Donald Trump wants to see a permanent ceasefire in Ukraine to end the bloodshed.
