North Macedonia’s top university reappoints Biljana Angelova as rector

North Macedonia's Institute of Economics professor Biljana Angelova has been re-elected rector of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje.

Academic staff across all university units held a secret ballot to choose between two candidates for rector: Biljana Angelova and Darko Danev, CE Report quotes MIA.

According to the University Election Commission, Angelova’s term as rector begins on September 16, 2026, and ends on September 15, 2029.

“The rector’s rights and responsibilities are governed by the Law on Higher Education, the Statute, and other acts of Ss. Cyril and Methodius University. This decision takes effect upon adoption,” the University Election Commission stated.

An objection to the decision and the minutes may be submitted in accordance with Article 182 of the University Statute to the University Election Commission via email at [email protected] and in the University archive within three working days, until May 4, 2026.

According to the minutes, Angelova received 2,924,125 points, while Faculty of Mechanical Engineering professor Darko Danev received 2,675,875 points in Tuesday’s secret vote.

Voting took place at 23 faculties and five institutes within the state university. It began and ended at the scheduled time, and according to submitted minutes and reports, no irregularities or problems were reported.

“The voting was conducted entirely in accordance with the Law on Higher Education, the University Statute, and the guidelines for the rector election procedure. Authorized observers were present during the voting process in some of the units. According to the electoral lists of the units, a total of 1,434 voters were registered,” the minutes state.

On the day of voting, 1,286 members of the academic staff across all university units cast their vote for rector, with 148 votes not cast and 59 invalid.
