Zion Suzuki close to historic Aston Villa move
Zion Suzuki is close to a historic move to Aston Villa, with the Japanese goalkeeper expected to join from Parma for a fee that could reach €35 million.
The 23-year-old would become the first Japanese goalkeeper in Premier League history, while also setting a record as the most expensive Japanese goalkeeper ever, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.
Suzuki, who was previously linked with Manchester United, was born in New Jersey to a Ghanaian father and Japanese mother. He moved to Japan at a young age, where he began his football journey.
The goalkeeper came through the Urawa Reds academy and made his Japan national team debut at a young age. In 2023, he moved to Belgian club Sint-Truiden to gain more experience as a regular starter.
At the 2024 Asian Cup, Suzuki faced criticism following several mistakes and was also subjected to racist abuse online after Japan’s defeat to Iraq.
“I will not let this defeat me. I want to respond by producing good results,” Suzuki said at the time.
Despite those difficulties, he remained Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper and moved to Parma in 2024, becoming the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in Serie A.
Suzuki suffered a hand fracture toward the end of 2025 but returned in time for the World Cup, where he delivered strong performances for Japan.
A move to Aston Villa would now open the door to the Premier League, where he hopes to prove himself in one of the strongest leagues in the world.
“I made a series of mistakes at first and showed a lack of experience as Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper. Now I feel that I can bring a sense of stability to the team through my mentality,” Suzuki said.
The Japanese goalkeeper has major ambitions for the future, aiming to become one of the best goalkeepers in the world and win major trophies.
