UEFA rejects immediate action against FIFA president

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is not currently considering any procedure to remove Gianni Infantino from his position as FIFA president, according to Le Parisien.

Despite growing dissent following his unsuccessful plan to open FIFA's capital to private investors, Infantino's position is not under immediate threat from the football bodies that have voiced opposition to the proposal, CE Report quotes AGERPRES.

According to the French daily, recent discussions held by UEFA regarding the financial project backed by the FIFA president did not result in any initiative aimed at removing him from office. Although the Italian-Swiss football executive has faced criticism, no motion of no confidence was raised during the talks.

Article 25 of FIFA's legal statutes provides for the convening of an extraordinary congress if requested by 20% of the member associations. Such a procedure could pave the way for a motion of no confidence against the president, particularly as UEFA holds 26% of the voting positions. For such a motion to succeed, it would then require a simple majority of the votes cast, meaning more than 50%.

Le Parisien reports that the French Football Federation (FFF) has so far shown no intention of making such a request, a position shared by the other member associations of European football's governing body. After ten years in office, Gianni Infantino is said to be increasingly vulnerable as the FIFA presidential election approaches in March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco. Unless an unforeseen event, such as his resignation, occurs, his successor is expected to be decided through the election, the French newspaper concludes.
