UEFA eyes changes to European Championship qualification system

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has admitted that changes to the European Championship qualification system are being considered, with the aim of making it more exciting for fans.

Speaking at the Portugal Football Summit 2025, Čeferin said that “perhaps the qualifiers could be different,” and that UEFA is working on new ideas that could be implemented in the future. He added that matches might no longer follow the current format, but instead adopt a system that is more appealing to the public, CE Report quotes Kosova Press.

Although the structure of the Euro tournament itself is not expected to change, UEFA is analyzing models similar to those of the Nations League or the Champions League, which have led to more high-stakes clashes between top teams.

These potential changes come at a time of growing dissatisfaction over frequent international breaks. Starting next year, FIFA will reduce them by merging the September and October breaks into a single three-week international window.
