Lionel Messi appears set to continue playing in Major League Soccer, as he is reportedly in advanced negotiations to extend his contract with Inter Miami, according to ESPN.

The two sides are in the final stages of discussions, with only details remaining to “lock in” the agreement, while the financial terms have not been disclosed, CE Report quotes ANA-MPA.

The 38-year-old Argentine superstar moved to Florida in the summer of 2023, and his current contract runs until the end of the 2025 season. In the current campaign, he has already scored 20 goals in 21 MLS appearances (second-highest scorer in the league) and provided 11 assists. Overall, wearing the Inter Miami jersey, he has recorded 41 goals and 27 assists in 46 league matches, while across all competitions he has scored 54 goals in 62 appearances.

With his presence, the team won the Leagues Cup in 2023 and secured the Supporters’ Shield in 2024 (awarded to the team with the best regular-season record), although they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. This season, Inter Miami (14-6-7, 49 points) is currently in 6th place in the Eastern Conference ahead of their home match against DC United.

An eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, Messi had a brilliant career with Barcelona (2004–21), winning 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies, and later celebrated two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain (2021–23). At the international level, he led Argentina to the top of the world at the 2022 Qatar World Cup and also won two Copa América titles (2021, 2024).
