Romanians Want Stricter AI Rules

Romania

Nearly 70% of Romanians are concerned about how artificial intelligence (AI) accesses and uses their personal data, according to a new survey by RoCoach and Novel Research. Worries about data privacy are widespread, including among digital-native youth aged 18–24, 71% of whom express concern, CE Report quotes Agerpres

The study reveals a strong preference for human oversight in AI applications, particularly in sensitive areas like healthcare, justice, and education. Only 20% of respondents support fully autonomous AI decision-making, while the majority either want AI decisions backed by human analysis or reject them entirely.

More than 60% believe AI should be strictly regulated by law, especially in sectors that directly impact citizens’ lives. Most respondents also prefer human interaction over chatbots when dealing with companies or institutions.

Despite their concerns, Romanians are not opposed to AI as a technology—just 9.5% view it as entirely negative. However, they emphasize that AI must operate within an ethical, transparent, and legally supervised framework.

As the EU debates the AI Act and updates to GDPR, the Romanian public sends a clear message: innovation must come with accountability, human control, and protection of individual rights.
