Romania Denies Guantanamo Transfers

Romania

The Romanian Embassy in Washington stated Wednesday that 47 Romanian nationals awaiting deportation are currently held in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) centers, and there are no plans to transfer them to the Guantanamo Bay naval base, CE Report quotes Agerpres

This clarification follows a Politico report suggesting that around 100 undocumented Romanians, along with other Europeans, could be sent to Guantanamo as part of a broader Trump administration plan to ease overcrowding in U.S. detention centers. According to the report, the Department of Homeland Security is reviewing the transfer of up to 9,000 migrants.

The Embassy emphasized Romania’s close cooperation with U.S. authorities on immigration issues and confirmed that Romanian citizens have never been placed in facilities outside U.S. territory. It also noted ongoing communication with American officials to ensure proper handling of deportations.

The Embassy formally requested confirmation from U.S. authorities about the accuracy of the Politico claims but reiterated that no such transfer is currently under consideration.
