Moldova discusses Transnistria reintegration with international partners
Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Valeriu Chiveri, met on October 7 with representatives of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) and the Platform for Security and Defence Initiatives (PISA) to discuss the country’s reintegration process and regional security.
Chiveri stressed that the reintegration of the country remains a national priority involving all state institutions and society as a whole. He said that achieving a peaceful, comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Transnistrian issue remains the central objective of the process, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.
“We cannot achieve reintegration without strengthening the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova,” Chiveri said. He added that the government’s goal is to create conditions allowing people on both banks of the Dniester to have access to quality public services, move freely and benefit from equal opportunities.
The participants also discussed the Convergence Fund, particularly projects intended to have a direct impact on people’s quality of life. Chiveri highlighted the need to improve social and medical services in the Transnistrian region and make them more accessible to residents.
One proposal discussed was the creation of a family medicine centre in Bender, which could improve residents’ access to primary healthcare.
Education was another important topic, including the right of children in the region to study Romanian. According to Chiveri, access to education in Romanian can help provide young people with broader educational and professional opportunities.
“We have all the capacity to invest and create conditions for a safe and developed life,” the deputy prime minister said, stressing that reintegration should be reflected in people’s everyday lives through freedom of movement, access to quality services, education, healthcare and modern infrastructure.
The meeting also addressed the regional security situation. Chiveri emphasized the importance of developments in Ukraine for regional security and stability, noting that they have a direct impact on Moldova’s security.
He also highlighted the importance of Moldova’s cooperation with its international partners and maintaining regular dialogue to advance the country’s reintegration through a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict.
Moldovan authorities continue to emphasize that any settlement should respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
