Moldova celebrates 32 years of its national currency

The Republic of Moldova is marking 32 years since the introduction of the national currency—Moldovan leu, an essential step in strengthening the country's economic independence following the proclamation of independence.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu sent a congratulatory message to his colleagues at the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) and all citizens, CE Report quotes MOLDPRES.

The official emphasized that 29 November 1993 represents the foundation of the financial stability of the Republic of Moldova and the completion of an important stage in affirming the state on an economic level.

"I congratulate all my colleagues at the National Bank of Moldova and the citizens on the introduction of the national currency on 29 November 1993, to build our economic independence and stability as an independent state. I am glad that 32 years ago, as the head of the Foreign Exchange Operations Department at the BNM, I contributed, alongside other colleagues, to the introduction of Moldovan leu. May our Moldovan leu be strong and trustworthy!" said Alexandru Munteanu.

The Premier expressed his gratitude for the efforts made by BNM specialists during that period, highlighting that the introduction of leu was more than a monetary reform—it was a step towards economic autonomy, development, and the country's ability to manage its own financial processes.

Moldovan leu continues to be one of the main symbols of the sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, and the authorities aim for it to remain stable, credible, and capable of supporting the country's economic growth in the coming years.

Moldovan leu (symbol: MDL) is the official currency of the Republic of Moldova, introduced on 29 November 1993, a few years after the country's declaration of independence. It replaced the Soviet ruble and was designed to support the state's economic stability and financial autonomy. It is issued and regulated by the National Bank of Moldova and is available in banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, and 5000 lei, as well as in coins of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 bani, 1, 5, and 10 lei.
