Russian breach of Polish airspace draws strong EU response

A Russian incursion into Polish airspace was the most serious since the war began and likely intentional, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said on Wednesday, CE Report quotes BTA.

Kallas said she was in contact with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Polish Deputy Prime Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. She noted that the European Union stands with Poland, adding that Russia’s war is intensifying rather than ending. Kallas called for raising the cost for Moscow, increasing support for Ukraine, and investing in European defence. She also expressed support for developing a defensive line along the eastern borders of Europe.

European Council President Antonio Costa also posted on social media that the previous night’s events were a clear reminder that the security of one is linked to the security of all. He described the violation of Polish airspace as unacceptable. Costa said Russia is irresponsibly breaching the airspace of EU countries and creating a direct threat to all Europeans and to key European infrastructure. He added that Poland is within its rights to take necessary steps to defend its sovereignty, and that peace and security in Europe cannot be taken for granted.
