Iran, UK, France, Germany to Resume Nuclear Talks in Istanbul

Politics

Istanbul is once again poised to become a center of global diplomacy this week. On Friday, the city will host negotiations on Iran's nuclear program involving the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. Additionally, a third round of talks between Ukraine and Russia is expected to take place, with a ceasefire among the key topics, though the exact date has not yet been confirmed.

That is according to TRT Haber, Ukrinform reports.

"Nuclear talks between Iran and the UK, France, and Germany will be held in Istanbul on Friday. Meanwhile, talks between Russia and Ukraine are also expected to take place in Istanbul this week," the outlet cited sources familiar with the matter.

According to the report, Iran agreed to a new round of nuclear talks at the request of the European parties to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Deputy Foreign Ministers Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Kazem Gharibabadi will represent Iran in the nuclear talks in Istanbul on Friday, July 25.

The previous round of talks in this format took place in Istanbul on May 16 but was suspended following Israeli strikes on Iran.

The broadcaster notes that the UK, France, and Germany have threatened to invoke the "snapback" mechanism under the nuclear deal, which would reinstate UN sanctions against Iran for violating the agreement.

As for the Ukraine-Russia negotiations, on June 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov had proposed holding the meeting this week. The president emphasized the need to accelerate the negotiation process and do everything possible to achieve a ceasefire.

The most recent prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia took place on July 4. Many of the Ukrainian defenders involved had been in Russian captivity since 2022.
