Erdogan, Syrian President Discuss Israel Strikes
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa held a phone call Thursday to discuss recent developments in Syria following Israeli airstrikes, Türkiye’s Communications Directorate reported, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
Erdogan condemned Israel’s attacks as “unacceptable” and warned they pose a threat to the wider region. He also welcomed the ceasefire reached with Druze groups in Suwayda and reaffirmed Türkiye’s continued support for the Syrian people.
President al-Sharaa expressed gratitude for Ankara’s backing of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Clashes erupted in Suwayda on July 13 between Druze militias and Bedouin Arab tribes, leading to the deaths of dozens of Syrian soldiers. After a brief ceasefire was broken, Israeli forces launched strikes on key Syrian government sites, including the presidential compound and defense ministry.
Another ceasefire was reestablished on July 16, but Israeli airstrikes continued in Damascus and Daraa. Hundreds are feared dead due to the combined impact of the clashes and Israeli attacks.
