ND Seeks Full Inquiry into OPEKEPE Corruption Case
Sixty MPs from Greece’s ruling New Democracy party on Wednesday submitted a proposal to parliament to establish an investigative committee into the longstanding issues at OPEKEPE, the agency responsible for managing EU agricultural subsidies, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia
Announced by Parliament Vice-President Giorgos Georgantas, the proposal calls for a thorough probe into OPEKEPE’s operations since its inception, including €2.7 billion in fines since 1996, irregularities in tax identification numbers, and the role of consultants. It also aims to identify structural failures and ensure subsidies are properly allocated.
The proposal dismisses concerns from the opposition over potential statute of limitations, noting that a 2019 constitutional amendment prevents such limitations. It highlights evidence of widespread corruption among senior officials, stressing the need to restore trust in the institution.
