Deadline Set for Iran Nuclear Deal Talks
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the foreign ministers of France, Germany, and the UK have agreed to set the end of August as a de facto deadline for reaching a nuclear deal with Iran, Axios reported Tuesday. If no agreement is reached, the European powers plan to activate the UN "snapback" mechanism, reinstating all sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear accord, CE Report quotes Anadolu Agency
The ministers coordinated their positions during a phone call, emphasizing that Tehran could still avoid sanctions by cooperating with the IAEA and removing highly enriched uranium. The 2015 deal, known as the JCPOA, has been under strain since the U.S. withdrew in 2018.
Tensions escalated further in June when Israel, with U.S. backing, launched a 12-day offensive on Iran. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israeli military sites. A U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect on June 24.
