Greece Backs Suspension of African Asylum Claims
Greece’s Foreign Affairs Minister George Gerapetritis defended a government amendment temporarily suspending asylum applications from African migrants during Thursday’s parliamentary debate, stating it is constitutional and aligned with international and European law, CE Report quotes Athens-Macedonia
He emphasized that Greece prioritizes protecting its citizens through controlled, not open, borders. The amendment mirrors a 2020 law enacted during a hybrid threat, aiming to discourage migration via the southern route from North Africa.
Gerapetritis warned against repeating the 2015 migration surge when Greece received 1.2 million migrants, stressing that waiting to react to a crisis is a risky mistake. He called on political parties to agree that Greece should not bear a disproportionate migration burden, send a strong message to human traffickers, and strengthen national defenses amid global instability.
